Duke of Edinburgh Award

Developing Yourself

The Challenge

The aim of the Duke of Edinburgh Award (D of E Award) is to inspire, guide and support young people in their self-development, and help them recognise their achievements. This matches our ethos very closely and we are proud of being one of the largest operating authorities in the UK. Depending on the level of award some or all of the following are required:

  • Volunteering - Get involved providing services to individuals or the community and make a difference to other people's lives
  • Physical - Get active and improve your skills and fitness in sport, dance or other physical activities - it's your choice
  • Skills - Find new interests and get new talents (or perfect existing ones), with increased practical and social skills
  • Expedition - Get outdoors and plan, train for and complete an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad - an unbeatable experience
  • Residential - Only at Gold level. Getting to the Gold level is a big deal and this last stage could see you going to another country, sharing tasks and activities with people you've never met. It'll test your mettle, and set you up for what life throws at you in the future
Many of our activities meet the requirements of the above, and where there is a gap we provide suitable experiences. For example in recent years we've arranged expeditions all over the UK, volunteering activities with service charities, overseas expeditions over the USA, South America and Europe. Costs are kept to a minimum with financial support available to low income families to ensure equality of opportunity to activities.

Value

Sometimes the work we do as a Cadet Force can be difficult to explain to other outside organisations, such as colleges and potential employers. The D of E Award is recognised internationally as an indication of personal development and the ability to create and follow a development plan. Many employers of young people see it as a clear differentiation between candidates, helping our Cadets get external recognition for their work.
